New Zealand Student Visa Changes - October 2026 Update
New Zealand student visa changes announced for 27 October 2026 affect several parts of the student visa process. Students should pay particular attention to research-master work conditions, evidence supporting genuine study and the dates attached to a new visa.
This article covers the October update. It complements our New Zealand student visa guide, which explains the wider application process. Read both alongside the current Immigration New Zealand instructions for your course and circumstances.
What changed on 27 October 2026?
The official student visa announcement identifies changes to work rights for new research-master applications, the assessment of English ability and genuine intentions, certain visa expiry settings, and processing arrangements where providers do not meet requirements.
The practical lesson is to check the exact application date and course type. A headline about student work rights should not be treated as a complete explanation of every student’s conditions.
Research-master work conditions
For master’s-by-research student applications lodged from 27 October 2026, the announcement replaces unlimited work rights with up to 25 hours a week during study and full-time work during scheduled holidays, subject to the applicable conditions. Do not automatically apply that position to an earlier grant.
Research-master and doctoral study are different categories. Immigration New Zealand’s student work guidance explains the relevant work conditions, including the doctoral position. Always read the wording on your own visa before agreeing to a work schedule.
A useful personal check is to compare three documents: the course offer, the application submission record and the visa grant. If an employer relies on a general article instead of the grant conditions, ask them to verify your actual permission.
English ability and genuine study
The October update gives English ability an explicit role in assessing whether an applicant genuinely intends to study. A strong application should explain the course choice coherently and support it with relevant evidence.
Our editorial recommendation is to build that explanation around your own study history, intended qualification and realistic plans. Avoid a generic statement that could describe any student. Check that the course name, level, provider and dates agree across the application and attachments.
An admission offer is one part of the evidence. It does not remove the need for Immigration New Zealand to assess the visa application. If your study background or proposed progression needs explanation, address that clearly and truthfully.
Expiry dates and education providers
The announcement changes the usual post-course expiry setting from one month to two months after course completion, while retaining the relevant 31 March setting. The exact visa grant still controls the date you must follow.
It also describes broader scope to suspend processing involving providers that fail to meet requirements. Before paying major non-refundable costs, review current official notices and ask the provider what applies to your course. Do not assume that an old enrolment brochure reflects the latest processing position.
New Zealand student visa changes checklist
- Confirm the course type: distinguish research master’s, taught master’s and doctoral study.
- Record the lodgment date: keep the submission confirmation.
- Read work conditions: use the visa grant when planning paid hours.
- Review study evidence: explain the course choice with your own documents.
- Check expiry: enter the granted date in your calendar.
- Review future plans separately: a student visa does not automatically grant a later work visa.
For the last point, our New Zealand work visa overview introduces separate work routes. Check their current requirements when your plans reach that stage.
Frequently asked questions
Does the announcement automatically rewrite an existing visa?
Do not assume that it does. Compare the application timing and your current grant with the official instructions.
Can every student work 25 hours a week?
No. Work permission depends on the applicable student category and visa conditions.
Should I plan departure from a general article?
Use the expiry date and conditions on your granted visa, then check official instructions if anything is unclear.
Editorial check: 31 October 2026. Review the official announcement and your individual grant before changing study or employment plans.
