Germany Opportunity Card - Requirements, Points and Proof of Funds
The Germany Opportunity Card, or Chancenkarte, is a route for eligible applicants who want to look for qualified employment in Germany. It is different from a visa based on a job offer you already hold. The first question is which qualification route you meet, followed by how you will finance the search.
Our Germany skilled worker visa guide covers employment with a concrete job offer. This article focuses on the separate job-search card under Section 20a of the Residence Act.
Two routes to the Germany Opportunity Card
The government’s Opportunity Card guidance describes two routes. Applicants with a qualifying German qualification or a foreign qualification fully recognized in Germany can qualify as skilled workers without using the points system. The alternative requires the basic qualification and language conditions plus at least six points.
For the points route, review the official categories for qualifications, language, experience, age, and other factors. Do not add points you cannot support with documents. A social-media calculator cannot decide whether a particular certificate meets the requirement.
Proof of funds and permitted work
The official 2026 financing benchmark is EUR 1,091 net per month, with accepted evidence such as a blocked account or declaration of commitment. Check the current amount for your application year. The initial search card can allow a stay of up to one year.
Within its conditions, holders may undertake secondary employment totaling up to 20 hours a week and job trials of up to two weeks per employer. These are not unrestricted permanent work rights. After finding suitable employment, check the appropriate residence permission before relying on the new role.
Documents to prepare
The official Opportunity Card questions and answers lists the core evidence. The responsible German mission can ask for additional documents.
- Identity: a valid passport and the application documents requested by the mission.
- Qualification: your degree or vocational qualification, with the relevant recognition evidence.
- Language: accepted proof where required for your route.
- Financing: evidence that meets the current living-cost requirement.
- Insurance: appropriate health cover for the intended period.
- Points evidence: documents supporting each category claimed.
As a practical filing method, keep the original certificate, translation, and recognition result together. Make a separate note explaining which requirement each item supports. This reduces confusion when several documents use slightly different names for the same qualification.
How to approach the application
- Check whether you need an entry visa and identify the German mission responsible for your residence.
- Determine whether you use the recognized-qualification route or the points route.
- Complete any necessary qualification checks and collect supporting evidence.
- Arrange financing and insurance that match the intended stay.
- Follow the mission’s application channel and appointment instructions.
- Review identity details and retain the submission record.
The government’s visa application overview explains the Consular Services Portal and local mission process. Online availability can vary. Use the responsible mission’s checklist rather than assuming every applicant follows an identical booking process.
Prepare a realistic job-search plan
Eligibility and a useful employment plan are different tasks. Before traveling, research employers, the language used in your field, recognition or licensing requirements, and the location of suitable vacancies. Budget for your search rather than assuming part-time work will immediately cover all costs.
Our practical recommendation is to prepare a short target list of roles and employers, then match your CV and evidence to those roles. Keep the search lawful and realistic. The card does not promise a job, a particular salary, or permanent residence.
