Canada PGWP Eligibility - Language and Field of Study Requirements
Canada PGWP eligibility depends on more than graduating from a Canadian school. Your credential, program, study history and application dates can affect whether you qualify for a post-graduation work permit. Check the rules before choosing a course or accepting a job start date.
This guide focuses on the checks that often cause confusion: language results, field of study and application timing. For the earlier study stage, see our Canada student visa guide. A study permit and a PGWP serve different purposes.
Start with the basic Canada PGWP eligibility checks
IRCC’s PGWP eligibility page sets out the full conditions. In general, you need a qualifying program at a PGWP-eligible designated learning institution, the required study history and an application within the permitted period. DLI status alone does not make every program eligible.
For most applicants, the program must last at least eight months, with a separate 900-hour rule for certain Quebec credentials. Full-time study is generally required, although the final semester can be part-time. Review exceptions directly rather than assuming an interruption will be accepted.
Which language level applies?
For applications subject to the language rules, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates need CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in all four abilities. Other university graduates also need level 7. College, polytechnic and other non-university graduates generally need level 5. Eligible flight-school graduates have separate exceptions.
Check IRCC’s PGWP document instructions for accepted tests and valid results. IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada are listed options. A course admission test is not automatically the correct immigration test. Results must be less than two years old when you apply.
Does your program need an eligible field of study?
Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees have no field-of-study requirement. For other university programs and non-university programs, it generally applies when the study permit application was submitted on or after 1 November 2024.
Use the six-digit Classification of Instructional Programs code, rather than a similar-sounding course title. IRCC’s eligible field-of-study list states that no fields will be added or removed in 2026. Where the requirement applies, eligibility can depend on the list at the study permit or PGWP application stage, so retain evidence of the relevant code and date.
Timing, documents and permission to work
The official application instructions explain the 180-day deadline and status requirements. Do not treat that deadline as automatic permission to remain or work for 180 days. Working while an application is pending depends on meeting the applicable conditions, including your position when applying.
Keep completion confirmation, transcripts, passport details and language evidence together. If your status has expired, check the restoration instructions promptly. Restoration and work authorization are separate questions. Our Canada work visa guide provides background on other work routes, but those routes do not replace the PGWP assessment.
A useful pre-application record
- Write down the credential and institution, including the exact program name.
- Ask the institution for the program’s six-digit CIP code if needed.
- Record the study permit application date and completion date.
- Compare all four language scores with the required benchmark.
- Check the application deadline and current immigration status separately.
- Save the official instructions used, with the date checked.
This record helps you identify a missing document early. It also prevents a common mistake: using a friend’s different credential or application date as proof that your own application qualifies.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Canadian diploma qualify for a PGWP?
No. Check the institution, individual program and all applicable eligibility conditions.
Do degree graduates still need a language test?
Where the language requirement applies, a field-of-study exemption does not remove the language requirement.
Can I start work as soon as I graduate?
Only if your immigration conditions authorize it. Graduation by itself does not grant work permission.
Editorial check: 31 October 2026. Use the current IRCC instructions for your credential and application history.
