UK ETA Requirements - Who Needs One and Who Is Exempt?
UK ETA requirements depend on your nationality, immigration status and journey. An electronic travel authorisation can be required for an eligible visitor who does not need a visa. However, having a visa-free passport does not mean you should travel without checking the ETA rules.
Start with the official UK ETA overview. It directs travelers to the right eligibility information. An ETA is permission to travel, and does not guarantee admission at the border.
Who should check UK ETA requirements?
Eligible visitors from many European countries, the United States, Canada, Australia and other listed countries use the ETA route for qualifying journeys. Check your actual passport nationality and purpose of travel, rather than relying on a broad country-group description.
Each traveler who needs an ETA must have their own, including babies and children. A parent can help with an application, but one adult’s approval does not cover the whole family. Review each passenger separately when organizing a group booking.
Who is exempt from an ETA?
The government’s ETA exemption guidance includes British and Irish citizens and people who already have the relevant UK immigration permission. British or Irish dual nationals should check which passport or evidence they must use; they cannot solve that issue by applying for an ETA as if they were ordinary foreign visitors.
Some lawful residents of Ireland qualify for an exemption when traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, subject to the stated conditions. Do not extend that exemption to every person passing through Ireland.
Airside transit without passing UK border control can also be exempt. Confirm the airport arrangements with your airline. Collecting checked luggage, changing airports or leaving the transit area may mean entering the UK and needing the appropriate travel permission. Our transit visa guide explains why the exact connection matters.
What does an ETA cost and how do you apply?
As checked on 31 October 2026, the official application fee is £20. Older announcements may show an earlier price. Use the live government application page to confirm the amount before payment.
You will need the passport you intend to travel with, an email address, payment details and the required photograph. Apply through the official app or website. A third-party service cannot obtain a faster decision simply by charging more. Check every passport character before submitting, particularly letters that resemble numbers.
Passport validity and repeat trips
An ETA is normally valid for two years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. It can support multiple qualifying journeys during its validity. Travel with the same passport used in the application; a replacement passport requires a fresh check and normally a new ETA.
Do not confuse an ETA with an eVisa showing existing UK immigration status. Someone who holds UK permission should review that status and travel-document link. For study-related background, see our UK student visa guide. An ETA does not replace a Student visa where one is required.
A family travel checklist
- List each passenger and the passport they will carry.
- Check ETA eligibility or the specific exemption for each person.
- Confirm whether a connection crosses UK border control.
- Apply through the official route and wait for the decision.
- Compare the approval and passport details before departure.
- Recheck if a passport, itinerary or immigration status changes.
Keep the decision email accessible, but remember that the authorisation is electronically linked to the passport. Booking confirmation and airline check-in are separate from the immigration decision.
Frequently asked questions
Does an ETA guarantee that I can enter the UK?
No. Border officers still assess admission under the applicable rules.
Can children travel on a parent’s ETA?
No. Each child who needs an ETA must have a separate authorisation.
Is every airport connection exempt?
No. Check whether your journey stays airside and whether the exemption applies to your circumstances.
