Australia Student Visa Changes - October 2026 Onshore and Family Rules
Australia student visa changes introduced on 2 October 2026 affect some applications made inside Australia and the inclusion of family members. Before paying another course deposit or arranging a family move, check whether the new application rules apply to you.
This is a focused update about the October changes, rather than another full Subclass 500 guide. For the wider application process, use our Australia student visa guide alongside the current Home Affairs instructions.
Who should review the October changes?
The Home Affairs update concerns Student visas, subclass 500, and Student Guardian visas, subclass 590. It is relevant to people applying in Australia, current students seeking another student visa, and applicants planning to include family.
Do not infer that a current visa has been canceled simply because the rules for a future application changed. Read the grant notice you already hold separately from the requirements for the next application.
Applying from inside Australia
The official October student visa fact sheet says most temporary visa holders can no longer lodge a student or student guardian application while in Australia. A current student seeking another student visa also needs to check the exemptions. Where the restriction applies, the applicant must be outside Australia both when lodging and when the visa is granted.
Exemption examples include certain course-completion extensions, progression to a higher qualification, PhD study, school study, and specified government sponsorship. The detailed conditions matter. Being enrolled in another course does not, by itself, establish an exemption.
Family members and subsequent entrants
The fact sheet also restricts including partners and dependent children unless an exemption applies. It lists exceptions such as PhD study and certain sponsorship, scholarship, or nationality circumstances. It states that current students cannot add subsequent entrants after grant, with no exemption to that rule. Applications lodged before 2 October remain subject to the earlier rules.
Families should distinguish three situations: family already included on a current visa, family included in a new application, and family hoping to join after grant. Treating them as interchangeable could lead to an unsuitable application plan. Check the official decision tree before making bookings.
What has not become optional?
The new application restrictions do not replace the rest of the student assessment. Read the Subclass 500 visa page for the full requirements and application instructions.
Separately, the Genuine Student requirement applies to applications lodged from 23 March 2024. Home Affairs prefers answers to the GS questions in the online form, with a 150-word limit per response, supported by evidence. A generic essay should not replace those answers.
A practical checklist before your next application
- Identify the application: note the subclass, intended applicant, and proposed lodgment location.
- Record the current position: keep your existing visa details and course information together.
- Check any exemption: write down the exact official condition you believe applies and the evidence supporting it.
- Review the family plan: confirm who is applying, when, and from where.
- Compare the documents: make sure course dates, qualifications, and family information are consistent.
- Resolve uncertainty before spending: use Home Affairs or an appropriately authorized adviser for a case-specific assessment.
Our editorial recommendation is to keep a short decision record with the date and official pages checked. It is more useful than relying on a screenshot of an old social-media announcement.
Frequently asked questions
Do the October changes automatically cancel my current student visa?
The fact sheet distinguishes existing visas from future applications. Check the conditions and expiry on your current grant.
Can a course offer prove I may apply onshore?
No. Admission and permission to lodge a visa application are different matters. Check the restriction and any relevant exemption.
Should every student use the same family checklist?
No. The timing, location, and exemption rules depend on the application circumstances.
Editorial check: 31 October 2026. Read the official fact sheet and visa page together before making study, application, or relocation arrangements.
