New Zealand Visitor and Transit Visa Applications - October 2026 Changes
A New Zealand visa online application is now the standard route for a selected group of visitor and transit visas. From 1 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand stopped routinely accepting paper forms for the affected categories. Travelers should check the application channel before preparing or posting a file.
This change concerns how applications are submitted. It does not give every passport holder visa-free entry or remove the requirements of the visa you choose. Here is how to work out the next step without confusing a visitor visa, a transit visa, and an NZeTA.
What changed on 1 October 2026?
INZ’s official application-channel announcement moves the listed visas to enhanced Immigration Online. The list includes the Transit Visa, Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa, and several specialist visitor categories. Paper applications submitted before the change continue through processing.
Some family-related visitor categories are outside this particular change. INZ also allows paper applications in exceptional circumstances after discussing the case with the applicant. Do not assume every New Zealand visa follows the same submission rule.
First choose the correct travel permission
Visiting New Zealand
A Visitor Visa can cover a holiday or a visit to family and friends. Whether you need one depends on your passport and circumstances. Some travelers can use an NZeTA instead. Read our New Zealand visitor visa guide for the broader route.
Connecting through Auckland
The official Transit Visa page covers eligible connections through Auckland International Airport for up to 24 hours. This permission does not let you enter New Zealand for a hotel stay or sightseeing. Different arrangements may apply if your connection requires entry, baggage collection, or another airport.
Prepare your application before opening the form
Build one organized folder for the trip. Our practical recommendation is to separate identity, itinerary, finances, and family documents. Clear filenames make your own final review easier, especially when several people are traveling together.
- Identity: use clear passport scans and an acceptable photograph.
- Travel plan: check dates, airports, connection times, and onward destination.
- Supporting evidence: follow the checklist for the actual visa, including financial or sponsor evidence where required.
- Family details: check whether family members belong in the same application or need a separate route.
- Translations: follow INZ’s language and document instructions.
The official Visitor Visa guidance explains its own evidence requirements. A checklist copied from a transit application is not a substitute.
How to submit a New Zealand visa online application
- Open the official visa page and confirm that it matches your trip.
- Use its application link to reach the correct INZ service.
- Enter identity details exactly as shown in your passport.
- Upload the requested evidence and review the completed answers.
- Check the applicable charge before paying and submitting.
- Keep the submission confirmation and monitor messages in your account.
Our recommended final check is simple: compare the passport number, intended arrival, departure, and airport details across the form and itinerary. Explain genuine differences rather than leaving the reader to guess.
Fees, processing, and travel bookings
Moving online does not create one universal fee or guaranteed decision time. Use the current fee and processing information for your selected visa. Do not treat an account registration, uploaded document, or payment receipt as a visa approval.
For a trip involving more than one country, use our transit visa guides to identify the separate checks along your route. Each country makes its own decision.
Frequently asked questions
Must I resubmit a paper application filed before 1 October?
INZ says earlier paper submissions continue to be processed. Check messages about your existing case before starting another application.
Does the change mean I no longer need a visa?
No. An online application channel and visa eligibility are separate questions.
Can I still ask to use a paper form?
INZ describes an exceptional-circumstances option. Contact the authority about that option before sending a paper application.
Editorial check: 31 October 2026. This guide explains the application-channel change. Check the official visa page for the requirements and service conditions that apply when you submit.
